PROCESS WORK

Proposal
Figure 1 Advanced Typography - Final Project ProposalWeek 9 (18/06/25)

After presenting in class, I decided to go for my second idea, which is Faces for Typeface.

Research
Figure 2 TypeFace References, Week 9 (18/06/25)

I first browsed online the simplest form of face drawing/doodles to understand its essence and main features that makes it recognizable as a face. After I've gotten quite an idea, I explore many typography that has face elements, like eyes and smiles.

Sketches

Idea Exploration

Figure 3.1 Idea Exploration Rough Sketches, Week 9 (18/06/25)

I tried to sketch out the ideas I've gotten from exploring my references and research. However, I quite struggle simplifying the features of a face to be a repeated trait in the letterforms. I tried to play with the counter spaces to look like the eyes and mouth, I tried to transform, dissect and split the letterforms to create a smile silhouette. I referenced multiple face visualization, from front view, side view, to the simple yet iconic 2 dots and lines as a representation of a face.

Chosen Idea Development

Figure 3.2 Idea Exploration Rough Sketches, Week 9 (18/06/25)

After extracting the ideas in my head into a sketch, I looked at them and decided to go for my first idea, as it looked most like an alphabet (less manipulated). I liked the idea I came up with, but I find difficulties in replicating the idea to some letters, as different letters have different shapes and characteristics. I then experiment with thicker weights as it better resemble the shape of a face compared to thin lines.

Font Presentation & Application

Font Presentation

After consultation, found out that the second and fifth presentation from the left is weak. So, I revised both of them.

Font Application
For application, I mostly reused my applications as the design. I inserted the design into a mockup template using Photoshop.

FEEDBACK

Week 9
General Feedback:
  • Construct you e-portfolio well as it could be a favor for us in the long run, for further education/job opportunities.
  • Balance work ethic &
  • Make sure to record every process since the beginning. Never scrap an idea, make a copy to enable
  • Make sure proportions of x-height, cap height, ascender and decender is correct.
  • Build uppercase & lowercase together.
Personal Feedback:
Fun idea, but depends on exploration, might be hard but make it better than the reference.

Week 10
General Feedback:
  • Build our lowercases side by side with our uppercase for accurate sizing.
  • When doing punctuation, do it in comparison with actual ones to make sure the proportion is correct.
Personal Feedback:
  • Invert the outline and fill. Rather than black outlines, make it black forms.
  • In my case, punctuations doesn't have to all include face features.

Week 11
General Feedback:
  • To make sure proportions of letters, numerals, and punctuation are correct, type it out first to know the ratio.
  • Numerals height: used to be uppercase, but now some are made shorter to balance with lowercases (Keyword: old style figures/old-style numerals).
Personal Feedback:
  • Might look better is lines/gaps width are thicker. Consider the contrast.

Week 12
General Feedback:
  • Font presentation is to present the features & characteristics of our font.
  • In font application, we should indicate that the type is crafted ourselves.
Specific Feedback:
  • Do it quickly

Week 13
General Feedback:
  • Submission is extended to next week for better outcome.
  • There is error on the competition (category missing), updates will be given through teams (might be after sem 2 ended).
  • Make sure all elements in e-portfolio is visible and all links work.
  • We can revise/improve previous works, but make sure to note it.
  • Before final submission, write a couple sentences for the purpose of the work.
Specific Feedback:
  • Make more variations for application.

REFLECTIONS

Experience
Task 3 is exciting to me, as it expects us to come up with new and creative way to solve problems. I had really high hopes for my work, though I knew what I chose to do will be hard. Sir Vinod has warned me too in the beginning when we present our idea. Sadly, I don't think I've reached my initial hopes. But, I am happy that I finished it no matter whether I am fully satisfied or not.

Observations
From attending the classes and meeting classmates every week, I realized that others are much better at seeing the reality and balancing it with their idealism. They know what their abilities are and took on tasks that are on their capabilities. Me on the other hand sometimes lean on idealism too much.

Findings
Feelings of failure in fulfilling our own ambition is very though. However life goes on!
