INSTRUCTIONS

Project 2A - Lalin

We're given video clips from senior's work inspired by Lalin. We're asked to trim and insert all the clips into a correct sequence, add text messages graphics, add sound effects, color correct and color grade to transform them into a polished video.

Project 2B - Production Shoot Trailer

We're made into a group to do a production shoot of some clips from the movie "Everything Everywhere All At Once". Each member were assigned different roles and encouraged to collaborate. After, we've shoot the video and audio clips, we edit them into a trailer. We are given the freedom to express our creativity in how we make the plot with supporting texts, sound, and color grading.

All of the editing was done using Premiere Pro.

PROCESS WORK

Project 2A - Lalin

I started my work for Lalin on week 3. I downloaded all the contents and make the sequence for Lalin according to the storyline. At this point, I'm not totally sure how it should be done and what my final result would be like, so I only focus on trimming the clips and inserted them in the right order.

On week 4, I adjusted the timings for my clips so the end product in total is exactly 35 seconds

On week 5, I placed the graphics of text messages to relate with the sequence of the clips I've done. I followed my memory of the original Lalin story. I also muted the video to make it easier for me to focus on editing the sound effects later.

On week 6, I put the sound effects of text message notification in accordance to the text graphic. I managed the ambience sound to emphasize the back-and-forth-switch between Lalin and astronaut. I altered the volumes using clip mixer to increase the sound effect and reduce the ambience. I also did minor adjustments on the clips' timing and graphic, and audio (bubble chat notification sound effects & ambience) to polish everything.

On week 7, we are taught how to do color correction & grading in Adobe Premiere Pro. In class we follow along and finished editing our Lalin video. Below is the detailed instructions on how to do color correction & grading.
  1. Window - workspace: Color
  2. Add comparison view to toolbar
    • before/after & reference/current
    • full screen/half screen (horizontal-vertical, switchable)
  3. Lumitree scope
    • Waveform: Luma (exposure)
    • Parade: RGB (color)
  4. Color Correct
    • Basic Correction (light)
      • Exposure: light & dark
      • Contrast: difference of light & dark
      • Highlights: lightest points (80-120 in graph)
      • Shadow: darkest points (0-20 in graph, darkest 0-5)
      • Whites
      • Blacks
  5. Color Grade (create new adjustment layer to edit all clips together: folder - file - new - adjustment layer).
    • Basic Correction (color)
      • White balance (eyedropper) - tells software what is white: automatically adjust color
      • Temperature (cold-warm)
      • Tint (green-purple)
      • Saturation
    • Color Wheels & Match
      • Midtones: usually orange for human (skintone)
      • Highlight
      • Shadow

Project 2A: Lalin - Final Result in YouTube

Project 2B - Production Shoot Trailer

We began our process in class on week 4. We were placed into groups and was instructed to decide each other's role for our production shoot next week. I initiated to be the assistant director whose main job is to manage schedules (time & location), guide crews, prepare all things necessary, take notes, and handle unexpected issues to ensure the production runs well according to target. I am someone who likes structure and organized plans, so I felt that this position suits me.

On week 5, we did a team shooting practice. We get to know and experience directly what our job is as the specified role. However, the initial director for my team was not present, so I got chosen to replace her on the spot. I was very nervous since I have never directed a production shoot before. But, at the same time, I was also quite excited and interested to my first opportunity as a director! Below are the plan we've discussed and prepared as a team.

Then the awaited day! On week 6 we did our production shoot. All of us came at 2.30 p.m. and immediately focus on our own responsibilities. Though we have divided our tasks, most of us didn't hesitate to helped each other cross division. As a result, we are able to finish on time at 5.50 p.m. I'm glad we enjoyed our process and didn't overly stress. Afterall, all is just a learning experience. Below is the documentation of our process along with the audio and video result.

After "it's a wrap", we were assigned to edit the clips gathered from our production shoot to create a trailer. Below is my trailer sequence.

On week 7 In class, we were given a tutorial on how to do color correcting & grading, and we were told to apply it with our own creativity to our project. Underneath is my editing process.

Below is the result of my trailer.

FEEDBACKS

Week 3 & 4
  • Start working on Lalin's sequence & graphic, slowly progress so it's easier at the end.
Week 5
  • Come early, don't be late, support each other.
  • Be independent, time is limited, no time to explain, need to fully understand everything to do.
Week 6
  • Collaborate & include every member in making importan/final decisions.
Week 7
  • For Lalin, since all the clips are connected and continuous, color correction is a must.
  • For trailer, all clips are separate, so color correct for consistency is not needed (exception: extreme differences). Focus in color grading and use many different color for the individual clips.

REFLECTION

Experience
In project 2, the instructions given wasn't super strict, so we had room for creativity. I had much fun doing exploration and expression in my works. I had a chance to do what I like, in my style. I'm also overjoyed by the group assignments. It pushes me out of my comfort zone to communicate and work together with others. Working with others also enabled me to reflect on my own strengths and weaknesses. Overall I'm grateful to have a pleasant experience in learning video shooting & editing.

Observation
Since I'm still a beginner in the world of shooting & editing, I noticed the need for me to reach out to external opinion and guidance in order to gain a more accurate perception to my work. I couldn't fully trust on my senses and skills yet.

Findings
Through this project, I got to understand more about the world of projection shooting I barely comprehend. I was able to build my experience in working in a team with crews of different expertise with proper tools. I was exposed to new terms in the different fields of shooting, from camera, lighting, acting, properties, set, costume, make-up, and many more. I also knew the components of video editing clearer and deeper from doing the two parts of the project. In summary, this project does improve my knowledge and my skill both in shooting and editing.
