Visual Analysis
Definition: A method to understand how formal design properties communicate ideas, content, and meaning trough its visual elements and principles. Practicing visual analysis improves critical judgement skills in interpreting designs/artworks.

3 Phases of Visual Analysis
  1. Observation: The process of closely looking and thinking, and finding the visual elements of a design on our own, without any research beforehand.
  2. Analysis: Reevaluate our observations on the work based on evidence, deep dive to the correlation between each visual elements which creates design principles, and think about its effects on the viewer.
  3. Interpretation: Combine observations and analysis with facts and historical context of the design from the designer or some trustworthy published sources.
Task 2 Recap
We are instructed to make a visual analysis of the artwork we chose. Then, we need to make sketches of 3 ideas on how we can improve the design in our own style, by interpreting the design principles learnt previously in task 1.

VISUAL ANALYSIS of Selected Artwork

Title of art   : Elemental-Bench-Payoff-Movie-Poster
Designer      : Disney - Pixar
Year             : 2023
Size              : 1080 x 1600 pixels
Art medium : Digital

Observation
The poster is designed in portrait (vertical format), presenting two large-sized characters in the bottom half center. One is blue with a rounded silhouette, while the other one is orange in a irregular figure. On the left side, the image presents more characters in smaller sizes which progressively gets smaller as it gets closer to the background. Behind the characters are a cityscape which is placed on the top 1/3rd of the image. The image is quite colorful, with blue being more dominant. Overall, the design is very full and compacted with its many details.

Analysis
The design emphasizes the blue and orange character since they're big in size and are placed in the foreground, right in the center of the design. The poster plays with proportion and scale, creating depth by making all the elements in the top half of the image very small compared to the elements in the bottom half. As a result, the elements in bottom half appeared to be closer to the viewer, while the top half seemed like in a distance. This invents a sense of figure and ground as well as hierarchy, as we are drawn to look at the bigger elements upfront first. The curves formed by the brown bridge creates movement, guiding the eyes to from the background, to the little characters on the left side, then to the two large characters and to the text on the bottom. The image suggests mild unity, through the use of mainly blue color with similar values. However, it makes the contrast in the image weak since the colors of the characters blended with the background, making it harder to differentiate.

Interpretation
The image is a poster for a movie called Elemental,  an animated film produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures in 2023. Just like what the title suggests, the movie tells a story of how different elements (fire, water, land, and air) could be in unity. The art style is quite unique and different from other Pixar or Disney movies, since it is a new theme which accentuates the true characteristics of the four different elements while also creating variations and diversity between the four.

IDEATION
Sketches, Rationale, & Reference

First Idea
Fig 1.1 Sketch 1: Unity

A vertically and horizontally balanced poster between the four elements. The lines, shapes and color will form a spiral shape to indicate how the different elements merge together. All the character's hands are pointing to the center as symbol of unity while also guiding attention to the title text being in the center of the spiral.

Second Idea
Fig 2.1 Sketch 2: Elements

A vertically balanced poster illustrating the four characters representing each elements with the title being at the top center. The background will be a gradient between the four main color of the elements (to show union) with little touches of the elements texture/patterns (as division).

Third Idea
Fig 3.1 Sketch 3: Elemental World

A breakdown of each elements' world, highlighting the diversity of each character through their surroundings. The background will be include objects representing different elements, with distinct color and texture difference. The flow of the eye will be guided by the characters' eyes.

FEEDBACKS
Week 4 consultation: Check feedback posted in the comment section of task 1 blogger regarding the chosen design.
Week 5 consultation: Third sketch is not really good, second one is okay, so go with the first idea. However, improve on first sketch, make the characters have a stronger movement.
