INSTRUCTIONS & PROCESS WORK

WEEK 1 - Introduction to Composition Designs

(Wednesday, September 24th, 2024)
We are asked to find our 3
favorite graphic design composition work from Pinterest and explain why we like the designs. Below are the 3 designs I choose.

Image 1

Figure 2.1.1 (Source: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/11259067812502215/)

Description:

I enjoy discovering fine quotes, and I adore designs that could transfer its meaning well (with accurate image/elements and precise text hierarchy) while still being pleasing to look at.

The image expressed:
The image tries to deliver the message “Learn To Fail” with supporting texts in smaller sized font speeded around a large image of a hand patching a wound. An image of a person covering its face next to an image of a person falling shows how it is normal and okay to fail.

Image 2

Figure 2.1.2 (Source: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/844493674379474/)

Description:

I love the way the picture enables different worlds to unite and seem like it is in the same place at the same time, without it looking separated.

The image expressed:

The image throws in what’s originally a 2D character into a 3 realistic environment. The 2D character is given some shading to look more 3D, but the man from the real world is given outlines to look more 2D to make the two blend better.

Image 3

Figure 2.1.3 (Source: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/596093700711962566/)

Description:

I like how the image is able to incorporate many aspects of Indonesia coherently by design and color. In my opinion, the image excels in highlighting the diversity of Indonesia through the use of many elements. All the elements are put together neatly and seamlessly. At close look, we could see every individual detail clearly.

The image expressed:
The point of the image is to express how Indonesia is wonderful by incorporating many aspects of Indonesia’s characteristics and wealth.

WEEK 2 - Collage Composition

(Wednesday, October 1st, 2024)
We are assigned to look for elements from various medias (e.g., magazines, brochures, newspapers) to then be cut out and composed into 3 different collage designs with our own concept & story.
Collage Composition Tutorial

Figure 2.2.1 Process in class

Below are my compositions along with its description.

Pre-Composition 1
Figure 2.2.2 (Unity)
Theme: Unity
Elements:
  1. A big holding hand image in the center portrays togetherness. It is placed in the very center to resemble unity towards the core, coming from the 2 sides.
  2. A medium-sized image of 2 heads cohering at the very top layer symbolizes unity.
  3. Patterns cut squiggly on the very back layer, positioned on top of the head, represent the mind/brain (which controls everything a body does) meeting and combining. This also guides viewer’s focus to the “unite” text.
  4. “The desire to love and hold, until death do us apart” text is added to further elaborate the whole meaning. It is positioned on the bottom section, underneath the holding hand image which is pointing towards it.
  5. 2 thin shirt images to represent the body, placed on the lowest layer at both sides hugging the description text.
  6. Tiny elements of hearts placed around to denote the sincere desire to unite.

Pre-Composition 2
Figure 2.2.3 (Step Forward)

Theme: Step Forward
Elements:

  1. A large foot step at the bottom right to represent a step forward. The image is placed on the bottom corner and is behind other elements (lowest layer) to set the theme of movement/progression.
  2. A medium-sized person walking onward enthusiastically facing the “new future”. It is positioned at the very top layer as the main image focus which captures an optimistic attitude (from the bright face expression and confident body gesture) for something new. It also brings the viewer’s focus to the “New Future” text by arranging the image so the person’s eyes are directed to the text.
  3. A small “steps” text at the bottom of the woman’s legs, so the viewer's eyes go straight down from the face → new future text → down following the woman’s silhouette to the “steps” text.
  4. Some small pictures of people walking to tie everything together, and also to put the next focus to the “steps” text. Meaning : the process of moving forward shall be taken with little continuous steps.
  5. Blank spaces resemble the mysterious/unknown trait of the future.

Pre-Composition 3
Figure 2.2.4 (View of Beauty)

Theme: View of Beauty
Elements:

  1. “Beautiful” text at the top center to clearly inform the theme to viewers.
  2. A big image of a woman holding a camera aims to represent the viewpoint of beauty. It's positioned on the right side with the woman’s eyes and camera directing towards the lower left area, leading to other elements. It's bundled with a large diamond (symbolizes treasure, something highly valuable) with shine reflection (imitates the flash from a camera capturing a moment) which is placed underneath the woman.
  3. Images of joyful faces, ranging sizes from medium to small from the lower left side. It acts as the object of “beauty” that is seen and captured. Meaning: Spreading smiles and happiness towards others is beauty.
  4. “Aglow with constancy of immortal beauty” text at the very bottom to deliver a message that: unlike physical beauty standards which change overtime, the beauty of sharing joy is forever eternal.

WEEK 4 - Digital Composition

(Wednesday, October 15th, 2024)
We are directed to create 3 compositions digitally in Adobe Photoshop using only the images provided.

Composition 1
Figure 2.4.1 (Keep Going)

Figure 2.4.2 (Keep Going - Golden Ratio)
Using golden ratio to focus the viewer's eyes on the kid’s back to the “keep going” text.

Composition 2

Figure 2.4.4 (Endless Creativity - Rule of Thirds)
Applying the rule of thirds in placing the main elements.

Composition 3
Figure 2.4.5 (Harmony)

Figure 2.4.6 (Harmony - Leading lines, Frames, Symmetry)
Implementing leading lines, symmetry, and framing to direct the eyes towards the 2 fish.

Final Composition
Figure 2.4.7 (Keep Going - Final)

I really enjoy creating compositions that could deliver a story or have some deep meaning behind it. For the composition above, I tried to portray a journey of a boy who is preserving through everything he faces in his journey and not looking back.

Steps I did in Photoshop:
  • Carefully cut the black texture to be the sky using the pen tool (the white specks on the dark background remind me of a beautiful night sky full of stars).
  • Trim the liquid texture image following its curvy pattern with the pen tool to look like a path.
  • I placed the bright orange grunge image as texture for the mountains.
  • Cut out a circle from the same grunge image as the red moon which ties in with the mountains to add a sense of unity to the composition.
  • I trimmed out the frame of the light in the train station image to form the gates.
  • I inserted the kid holding a ball from the people image on the very top layer to act as a foreground (main focus).
  • On his back I placed letters which I cut one by one from the typewriter image to be arranged as “keep going” text.
  • Behind the text I added a plain black parallelogram which ties in with the dark sky to highlight the words. I directed the parallelogram points following the direction of where the kid is walking.
Creating the composition is a super fun process, I got to rack my head to come up with different ideas on how to best utilize the images given. Besides, getting to see how everyone else did their composition also widened my perspective and imagination on compositions, shapes, and layers.

Adjustment Layers & Filters
Figure 2.4.8 (Keep Going - Edited)

I got to explore how to use different adjustment layers and get to know how each tool affects images. The adjustment layers I used in the composition above are:
  • Vibrant, curves, channel mixer, and levels to enhance the color of both the moon and mountain (because I think their color previously was a bit pale and not vibrant enough).
  • Invert and levels to recolor the path (I inverted the color of the path so it correlates better with the dark sky).
  • Levels to darken the gates for the purpose of adding dimension.
  • Levels and channel mixer to the boy (so he blends better to the new adjusted environment).
  • Levels to brighten the letterbox.
It’s mesmerizing to understand how little adjustments done to the layers could really upgrade and change the look of an image.
